grand crat\u00e8re qui borde la mer de la s\u00e9r\u00e9nit\u00e9 et qui est assez spectaculaire \u00e0 observer. D&rsquo;un diam\u00e8tre de 95 km, il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;un \u00ab\u00a0vieux\u00a0\u00bb crat\u00e8re puisqu&rsquo;on estime sa formation \u00e0 4 milliards d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, et d&rsquo;ailleurs une partie du fond du crat\u00e8re a \u00e9t\u00e9 recouvert par de la lave venue de la mer de la s\u00e9r\u00e9nit\u00e9. On distingue en son centre un autre crat\u00e8re, des cr\u00eates et diff\u00e9rentes petites montagnes. D&rsquo;autres crat\u00e8res environnants sont remarquables, comme Chacornac, de forme pentagonale et travers\u00e9 par une rainure, ou Le Monnier, crat\u00e8re au fond plat recouvert de lave dont une partie de la muraille ouest est effondr\u00e9e, et dans lequel s&rsquo;est pos\u00e9e la sonde sov\u00e9tique Luna 1 en 1959.
